4th Annual Healthy Trucking Summit Scheduled in Atlanta

The trucking and transportation industries are currently under seige by obesity, diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. The Healthy Trucking Association of America wants to change that.

After private and federal medical studies have determined that nearly 80% of truck drivers are overweight, calling attention to health problems within the industry is more vocal than ever. Carriers and companies who service truck driver needs are making their own plans to revitalize the health of our nation’s drivers, but this ultimately may not be enough. The HTAA is now calling on transportation company managers and the drivers themselves to begin making smarter, more informed choices on the road, at the table and during downtime. Their lives ultimately depend on it.

The Healthy Trucking Association of America’s fourth annual Healthy Trucking Summit will take place April 24-26 in Atlanta at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center.

The 2012 event theme is “Raising Awareness to Taking Action.” The summit will include presentations on obesity and weight loss, sleep disorders, hypertension and heart health, respiratory health and diabetes.

HTAA will also kick off the official industry-wide promotion of Drive4COPD, an awareness campaign for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The HTAA has teamed with the COPD Foundation to spearhead this health initiative designed to help people determine if they suffer from or at risk for COPD, the third leading cause of death in the U.S.

Each year for the Healthy Trucking Summit, the HTAA invites trucking industry leaders, including safety directors, human resources directors, recruitment and retention managers, and other trucking fleet and organization executives to attend the summit to network and receive information and resources to help drivers live healthier and longer lives.
