How To: File A Complaint with the DOT

Published:

Have you ever been in a situation where you were aware of a reckless driver or and unsafe company, and didn’t know what to do about it? Learn how to report your concerns with this step-by-step guide.

In an emergency situation, the DOT advises that you immediately call 911 to report the incident.

If the problem is a non-emergency and it’s happened within the past 60 days:

Call 1-888-DOT-DAFT (368-7238). This hotline is accessible Monday-Friday from 9:00AM – 7:00PM Eastern Standard time.

If you would rather file your complaint online:

  • Simply visit this webpage: http://nccdb.fmcsa.dot.gov/
  • Choose between “Public,” “Drivers,” or “Industry” – whichever is most relevant to your situation, and select “Start.”

OR

  • Head to the Department of Transportation website: http://www.dot.gov/
  • Select “Trucking and Motorcoaches” on the right hand side of the page.
  • Select “File a Complaint”
  • Choose between “Public,” “Drivers,” or “Industry” – whichever is most relevant to your situation, and select “Start.”

Once you’ve started the process you will choose your complaint type from a checklist of categories, and select “Continue.” After you’ve done this, you will be provided with contact information, and any other options that could be applicable to the situation.

Have you personally filed a complaint with the Department of Transportation? What was the process like for you? Did you feel that your efforts made a difference? We would love to hear more about your experience! Let us know how it went – send us an email to [email protected], or tell your story in the comments section.
