Busy East St. Louis Ramp Closed St. Louis Business Journal by Greta Weiderman, Web Editor

The ramp from westbound Interstate 64 to eastbound Interstate 55/70 in East St. Louis will be closed to all traffic starting Monday, weather permitting.

The ramp will be closed to remove retaining walls and do construction associated with the new Mississippi River bridge, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced.

All traffic will be detoured around the area using Interstate 255 to Interstate 55/70, and the work is expected to be complete by Jan. 31.

The new $229 million Mississippi River bridge, the first new structure to connect St. Louis and Southwestern Illinois in 40 years, is on schedule to tower above the river by early 2014.

The new bridge is part of a larger, approximately $700 million project, that also includes the relocation of interchanges on both the Illinois and Missouri sides of the river. The bridge project is being built by a joint venture comprised of St. Louis-based Alberici Corp.Massman Construction Co. of Kansas City and Traylor Bros. Inc. of Indiana.
