Shortage of Diesel Fuel In Michigan Prompts Gov. To Lift HOS Laws

The shutdown of the West Shore Pipeline in Wisconsin has resulted in a shortage of diesel fuel for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  The shortage is a result of a leak in the pipeline. This week, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder declared a state of energy emergency.  

“His executive order, issued shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday, lifted hours-of-service restrictions on when drivers delivering gasoline, diesel fuel and jet fuel can be on the road. The order will remain in effect until midnight Aug. 7 unless it is rescinded before then,” Michigan Live reported.  

Drivers and carriers who have been ordered out-of-service are not eligible for the exemption.

The fuel shortage has forced drivers to divert their routes through Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin, making it difficult for drivers to comply with HOS laws.  

“This energy emergency declaration is necessary to ensure that petroleum supplies will remain sufficient and to assure the health, safety and welfare of Michigan residents and visitors,” Snyder said in a statement.

The exemption will expire on August 7 at 11:59 p.m., or until its rescinded, whichever comes first.
