Trucking Community Mourns The Death of The American Driver

On Sunday, October 14, 2012, Fred Schaffner of the American Driver passed away. He was 52. Schaffner was a long-time driver and driver’s advocate.
In April 2008, Schaffner and several other drivers traveled to Washington to protest high diesel prices and met with Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions, senior member of the Energy Oversight Committee.
“Fred suggested that the land consisting of decommissioned military bases be used for oil refineries since it had been contaminated by the jets flying overhead. His involvement helped to lead to the Energy Production Act of 2008,” Allen Smith wrote.
Schaffner also played an integral roll in the removal of the “2 Hour Parking Limit” sign removal from Virginia State rest areas. He addressed his concerns about the time limits to Jeffrey Caldwell, VDOT Chief of Communications on The Truth About Trucking radio show.
Schaffner’s best known saying was, “Stand up, speak out or accept what comes.”
