Virginia Tech To Study Effectiveness of EOBRs

Published:

Virginia Tech To Study Effectiveness of Electronic On Board Recorders Virginia Tech Transportation Institute has been awarded a grant by the FMCSA to study whether EOBRs can reduce the risk of fatigue-related crashes.

The group will evaluate the existing DOT data to compare safety records and crash rates among EOBR-equipped trucks and non-equipped trucks.

“For this research project, we will look at crash and vehicle data to determine whether trucks with electronic onboard recorders have a significantly lower crash rate than those without,” Jeff Hickman, occupational health and safety expert for Virginia Tech, stated.

“Our database will also allow us to look at preventable crashes and crashes that have been designated as fatigue related,” Land Line reported.

The group aims to “evaluate the potential safety benefits of EOBRs.”

In addition, the group will study HOS compliance, research the number of fleets and operators currently using EOBRs, as well as how much the devices will cost companies to install and operate and whether the EOBRs provide the benefits some groups claim.
