Video Shows Need For Left Lane Laws, Authorities Say

This footage is from a police dashcamera. It shows footage of an Iowa woman whose car’s accelerator was stuck. The woman’s car reached speeds of 100+ mph.

Missouri police said the footage shows the need for left lane driving laws. From the footage, you see an SUV camped out in the left lane. The SUV’s driver wouldn’t even pull over for the trooper who was behind him.

The Iowa woman had to drive along the shoulder of the highway to avoid hitting the SUV.

PA has a “Pass Left Lane Only” law on the books but I NEVER see it enforced. They should change it to “Live in Left Lane Only”! As far as the procedure-it should be in the manual and shown to new operators.

We truckers can’t run the left lanes in a number of states..Yet we pay for use in all lanes! Maybe states should charge 4wheelers to run the hammerlane..Or how about a refund check for all the times I’ve paid for it but am not allowed to run it..

as for the law, many of these laws especially right hand lane laws were passed when there were a lot less vehicles on the road. now there is enough traffic to not only take up al the lanes, but at times so much so, that the traffic actually is slowed. I have been trying to slow down, save fuel, and ride in the right lane… but there is always someone there driving 15, 20, 30 miles below the flow of traffic. if these people do not have a good reason for going so slow they should get a ticket.

it appears to me that the vehicle changed speeds several times in the video. if the accelerator was stuck open, would it not just go to max speed and stay there? I think maybe she is behind a payment or two. something is not kosher, cause if you want to stop a speeding car, you can. many others on here know how. just putting the vehicle in neutral would work. just apply the brake a little and shift. a standard would be even easier, just push on the clutch. whoa la! now you just have a coasting vehicle with a revving motor, if it really is stuck.

I see a lot of “put it in neutral and shut it off” I assume this to be an act of saving the car. First off, IF a car ever did that to me, it’s gonna be outa my life, immediately!! I’m leaving it run in neutral as the factory installed rev limiter should prevent the motor from blowing. Then you have brakes and steering. However, before that, I am gonna put my brake peddal through the floor. A four cylender or even a V-6 would not have the power to go against the force of the brakes applied hard. Especially if you get into the dirt on the side of the road at lowered speed. Regardless of fault, hers or actual manufactures defect, she should have been sited for reckless endagerment. God forbid if she would have hit someone. Oh wait, she drives a four wheeler and as all real drivers know, traffic law does not apply at four wheelers…

One expert, John Schembra of Concord, who teaches emergency driving to police around the state, said that if braking doesn’t slow down the car, turning off the ignition might be the safest tactic – so long as you’re traveling on a straight road and the car hasn’t yet hit high speeds.
“You will lose power steering, but that doesn’t mean you can’t steer the car – it just takes effort,” said Schembra, 62, a retired Pleasant Hill police sergeant. “Same with power brakes – you’ll lose power brakes, but you’ll still have brakes.”
As for abruptly down-shifting a car at high speed, it may damage the engine, but “that’s a minor thing considering the alternative,” Schembra said.
