You all know the amount of pressure in a truck’s tire, as illustrated by the video of a man puncturing a truck’s tire.

This video shows what can happen when a truck’s tire explodes.

The reason he wrecked and what most drivers do not understand, is watch it again.
It’s the STEER tire that blew and the next thing you see is the brake lights coming on.

DO NOT HIT YOUR BRAKES WHEN A TIRE BLOWS! Even in your car or on a motorcycle! (I have 32 years 3 million miles experience!)

The reason why is with a steering tire blowout, when the tire goes down it starts to pull in that direction.
When you apply your brakes you multiply that force and the truck pulls harder to that side.
It becomes extremely hard to maintain control when the tire or rim is on the ground not doing what they should be doing.
When a steer tire blows hold your speed until you have control of the steering wheel as it WILL pull towards the side that blew.
When you have control THEN remove your foot from the accelerator pedal and let the truck slow that way but turn off the jake if on as that does NOT help! When the truck is fully under control and slowing THEN use the brakes LIGHTLY until you come to a stop!
If you are worried about screwing up a rim, WHY? Is that rim worth the cost of the truck, hitting another vehicle or even killing someone? Besides that rim just might already be a piece of junk when it slammed to the road surface.
Don’t believe me? Look for a training film from back in the 80s called “Steering tire blowout.” They went to a lot of trouble to make tires blowout and document what happens and how to safely maintain control of the truck!
I’ve had several steering tires to blow in my 3 million miles on the road and 1 rear tire on my bike and staying OFF the brakes was the best thing to do!

had the outside dually on a logging truck blow about 50 feet in front of me on my tricycle in west virginia. sounded like a bomb and shrapnel was everywhere. i did a lot of bobbin n weavin and never got touched but it sure was exciting for a minute

I was northbound in NW TX some time back cruising north on 2 lane US 83 when just as I was meeting 2 southbound trucks one of the outside drive tires of the lead truck exploded & I took a chunk to my windshield at face level. Trust me when I say that was an attention getter!

You can see that this is not an American truck. Standards outside North America are the worst. Most likely this guy has shitty tires to start with and was overloaded. I blew a trl tire a number of years ago in Il on I-90 between Beloit and the first toll booth. I was pulled over by an Il State Trooper who was kind enough to give me back my tire which had landed on the hood of first brand new squad car.(first shift used). Luckily he was sitting in the median doing paper work at the time.

again I say you can be the best truck driver and do all your pre trips and even have new tires and I have seen the tires blow out so don’t only blame it on the pre trip the bull.

you won’t necessarily prevent every blow-out by a pre-trip but it will weed out some.

pretrip it all you want could have been a faulty tire… I had steer tire lesss than 2500 miles from the time it was put on , some rookies don’t realize that when the tires are new they are more dangerous an apt to blow than an older tire..and another thing another rookie story what curbs and obstacles did some one else run over preveous to you getting the truck or trailer?

Hell I had a brand spanking new steer tire blow out on me LESS THAN 60 MILES after I had it put on! That’s right! Less than 60 miles. So I have to agree with you about the pre-trpping! You can do it til you’re blue in the face, tires blowing out like that are TOTALLY unpreventable! But try telling that to a California cop or judge when one blows out and hit a kills one of those idiot motorcyclist that likes to pass between you and someone else already passing you cause they WILL say it’s your fault due to pretripping!

truckers are easy money ,always at fault .i drove a company truck and finally convinced them to not use recaps because of the damage when they come apart, at least a new tire (not recap) comes apart in one big chunk (alligator)

I blew one 2 days ago, drive not a steer, and I did do my pre trip plus a couple walk arounds during stops. Tire was also less than 2 months old so like stated below, it can happen pre trip or not.

Video never said if he did a pre-trip inspection or not…you can do a pre-trip inspection and drive 15 to 30 minutes later have a blow out!

A lot of the folks from Manitoba will come up on you in the hammer lane and then, just hang there beside the left rear tires. We run Super Singles on our trailers and when one of those babies blows, you think an artillery round has hit near you!

This is why, people….This is why it is STUPID to hang back by the left rear of a big truck when it’s going slower than you. Pass the truck and get the heck away! I have heard about people getting killed by a tire blowing off a big truck. Good Pre-Trip or bad Pre-Trip, a tire can blow without warning!

Dude what are you talking about, the guy was 3 truck lengths back and 2 lanes over from the truck. They didnt crash into each other so he must have done something right!

I agree, you can lose a steer tire any time , I lost one about 3 months ago , 3:00 AM just cruising along in the indiana toll road , BANG , off to the left we go got stopped ok but I always plan for a what if and glad i did
