According to the Joplin Globe, a truck driver was killed Wednesday in a crash after the driver swerved to avoid a collision with a suspected bank robber.
On Wednesday morning, Frances H. Dishmon, 50, allegedly walked into the IBC Bank on North Main Street in Miami, Oklahoma and handed a note to a teller that stated, “Got a gun. Give me all your money.”
“The robber appeared to become overwhelmed with apprehension while the teller was complying with his demand, the police chief said,” the Joplin Globe reported.
“He then left that the bank without any money,” Miami police Chief George Haroldson told the Joplin Globe.
Dishmon then fled the bank and led and headed north through Quapaw on U.S. Highway 69A. Police began a high-speed pursuit of Dishmon near Quapaw.
According to the state patrol’s report of the accident, Dishmon was attempting to pass a northbound truck when he swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle. Dishmon’s car glanced off the driver’s side front of driver James Carl Wivell’s, 48, truck and went into a spin and landed in the ditch.
Wivell swerved to avoid Dishmon’s car and lost control of his truck and crashed. He died at the scene.
Police apprehended Dishmon. He is currently being held in the Ottawa County Jail.
The Ottawa County District Attorney has filed a second-degree murder charge against Dishmon for Wivell’s death.
