UPDATE: Despite Government Shutdown, Truckers Strike Is Still ‘Full Steam Ahead’
UPDATE: An official from “Truckers Ride for the Constitution” sent a letter to US News and World Report stating that Earl Conlon’s statements to US News and World Report regarding the upcoming strike do not reflect the opinions of the organization.
In the letter to US News and World Report reporter Steven Nelson, Peter Santilli, Media Spokesperson for the Ride for the Constitution, stated, “We hereby respectfully request a retraction or update on the article to indicate that Earl is in no wayassociated with the mission of the ride. He was merely a point of contact for drivers at a meeting placefor the start of the convoy. Please immediately update the article so as not to create the falseperception you have portrayed in your article.”
Today, the award-winning publication US News and World Report featured the upcoming trucking strike.
According to the report, the drivers plan to circle the inner loop of the Washington, D.C. beltway beginning at 12:05 a.m. on Friday, October 11. The drivers will be lined along up three-lanes across of the I-495, though the organizers say they’ll leave the left lane open for emergency vehicles only.
Truck driver Earl Conlon, who we’ve now learned is not affiliated with the group organizing the strike, told US News that commuters are discouraged from using the left lane, ”everybody that doesn’t have a supporter sticker on their window, good luck: Nobody in, nobody out.” The trucks will be going the posted 55 mile-per-hour speed limit.
Drivers and supporters must have a “T2SDA” (Truckers To Shut Down America) sticker or sign on their window to be allowed admission into or past the convoy, Conlon told US News.
“It’s going to be real fun for anyone who is not a supporter,” Conlon said, “[and] if cops decide to give us a hard time, we’re going to lock the brakes up, we’re going to stop right there, we’re going to be a three lane roadblock.”
Last week, former country music singer Zeeda Andrews said the participants would present their demands to congress, including the impeachment of President Obama, but Conlon told US News that isn’t exactly the agenda the convoy has in mind, rather, they’d like to see that any government official who has “violated the oath of office” be arrested.
“Conlon cited the idea of a citizens grand jury – meaning a pool of jurors convened without court approval – as the mechanism for indicting the officials,” US News reported.
Conlon told the publication that the convoy is “coming in with the grand jury.”
“We are going to ask the law enforcement to uphold their constitutional oath and make these arrests. If they refuse to do it, by the power of the people of the United States and the people’s grand jury, they don’t want to do it, we will. … We the people will find a way,” he said.
“What we want to do is go in nice and peaceful and keep it as peaceful as possible… but if they decide to get ugly with us we’re going to do what we have to do,” he said. “If all I get is one or two congressmen walked out of there in handcuffs, that will be a shot across the bow that will ripple across all branches of government. … I hope they are all civil enough and brave enough to step out onto the congressional steps.”
It is more likely that anyone who tries to make a citizen’s arrest on a member of congress would be arrested themselves and could even be charged with attempted kidnapping, US News reported.
To date, 91 have RSVP’ed to the facebook event “Support The Trucker Strike” and the actual number of those who plan to attend is unknown.
The strike is planned to take place from Friday, October 11, to Sunday, October 13.
The organizers of the strike are calling on those who can’t attend to shut down commerce by not purchasing any goods that are delivered by truck for the three days of the strike.
“Americans must support this effort by refusing to purchase consumer goods the same weekend.
“Stocking up before, or repleneshing after, won’t hit the pocketbooks the same way that deliberately eliminating our economic footprint will. It will only transfer that line item to somewhere else in the profit ledger, and the truckers will just have to play catch up.
“Support the strike by planning ahead and figuring out creative ways to be totally self-sufficient for those three days!! Post your ideas here and let’s figure out how consumers can support the shutdown and strike,” Support The Trucker Strike states.
The group is recommending people purchase food goods from their local farmer’s markets and to conserve the goods you have and spread them out for the duration of the strike.
In addition, the group is calling on supporters to “Bring your flags and signs tot he Overpasses, honk at them and the convoy, drive with your lights on, fly your flag and yard signs, FB posts, wear Red, White and Blue.”
Do you plan on participating in the strike? Why or why not?
