Stuck Driver Says GPS Led Him Up Steep Road

Published:

KSL Utah reported that a truck driver who followed his GPS up steep Butterfield Canyon found himself between a rock and a hard place…literally.

The driver, who has not been identified, was headed to deliver a load to the Bureau of Land Management at the mouth of the canyon.  The driver made his way to the canyon and kept going, despite the hairpin turns and narrow roads, because his GPS instructed him to.

“Ultimately got to the point where he just couldn’t turn around,” Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said.

Once the driver realized there was nowhere else he could go and that he was stuck, he called for help.

“He got near the top of the canyon where he came within inches of his semitruck being right on the edge of going off a couple hundred foot drop-off,” Hoyal told KSL Utah.

Rescue crews were called in and two-thrids of the cargo was offloaded.

A front loader was used to lift the trailer around the hairpin turns.  The driver was escorted to the top of the canyon where he was able to turn around.

“The roads become very windy and very, very narrow,” Hoyal said. “It’s hard for a car to turn around, let alone a semi.”

Six hours later, the driver made it to his original destination.  There is no word on whether or not the driver was using a truck-specific GPS.
