Brake Safety Week 2014 Starts This Sunday

Published:

Get ready, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual Brake Safety Week is fast approaching. Thousands of commercial vehicles will be stopped this Sunday, September 7 – Saturday, September 13 and checked for faulty brakes.

The inspections are done by local, state, provincial, territorial and FMCSA officials throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

According to the CVSA, out-of alignment brakes and brake system violations constitute half of all out-of-service violations issued to commercial vehicles. They say the objective of the annual enforcement campaign is to reduce the number of highway crashes caused by faulty brake systems.

During the campaign, officials will primarily conduct Level IV brake inspections. Defective or out-of-adjustment brakes will result in the vehicle being placed out of service.

Officials hitting the road during this year’s Brake Safety Week will be inspecting:

* Loose or missing parts

* Air or hydraulic fluid leaks

* Worn linings

* Pads, drums or rotors

In addition to brake issues, CMV inspectors will also be checking:

• Driver License

• Registration

• Low Air Warning Device

• Pushrod Travel (Adjustment)

• Brake Linings/Drums

• Air Loss Rate (If leak detected)

• Tractor Protection System

During last year’s brake week, 20,067 vehicles were inspected with 1,811 placed out of service for brake adjustment issues; 1,434 were taken off the road for faulty brake components; and 2,714 were placed out of service for overall brake issues.

Brake Safety Week started in 1998 and more than 3.4 million vehicles have been inspected since then. During this year’s brake week, the number of inspections is expected to reach 30,000.
