From now until the end of January, Delaware state police and Newark authorities will be pulling trucks over on Delaware 896 and on Christina Parkway between Elton Road and South College Ave.
Drivers hauling more than five miles outside the city limits for delivery will be ticketed.
This stretch of road is off-limits to vehicles surpassing the 9-ton limit with the exception of those making ‘local deliveries.’
The weight limit and locality ruling was not being enforced over the summer due to the Delaware DOT’s failure to define exactly what areas the term ‘local’ encompassed.
The new definition of ‘local’ includes trucks delivering within the city limits, or within 5 miles of the city limits, as well as trucks going directly from a delivery in the city or within 5 miles of the city limits.
Delaware’s DOT signed off on these new parameters in October and have agreed to spend $43,000 (for Newark police) and $45,000 (for the State Patrol) to enforce them between November 1st and January 31st.
The target of this enforcement period seems to be long-haul drivers traveling between Florida and Maine. Drivers have been getting off of Interstate 95, traveling on Christina Parkway, and then getting back on 95 at Elkton, Maryland to avoid the state line toll.
The sting will also be targeting log book, classification, and equipment violations.
