Study Says Truck Drivers Twice As Likely to Be Obese

Published:

According to the CDC, obesity is the third-leading cause of death in the United States.

A new study published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), truck drivers are twice as likely to be obese than workers in any other industry.  In addition, the study found that truck drives are “more likely to smoke and suffer other chronic disease.”

“NIOSH interviewed 1,670 truckers at various stops across the country in 2010, asking them about their health and work practices. Of those interviewed, 69 percent were found to be obese and 54 percent smoked, while 88 percent reported having a risk factor (e.g., hypertension, obesity, and smoking) for chronic disease,” Occupational Health and Safety Online reported.

According to the study, 61% of truck drivers said they have two or more high-risk health factors: hypertension, obesity, smoking, high cholesterol, no physical activity or few hours of sleep.
