California Town’s Truck Parking Ban Expanded

Published:

Trucks will no longer be able to park select business park streets in Vista, California.

Last week, the Vista City Council voted unanimously to ban all trucks weighing over 10,000 pounds from parking Park Center Drive, Oak Ridge Way, Aspen Way, Avenida Chelsea and Dos Aarons Way.

These streets are added to a group of streets surrounding the business park that were already put on the no-parking list in December 2012. The previously banned streets are Dogwood Way, Grand Avenue, Birch Street, Coral Street and Cades Way.

The parking ban is related to a complaint by Bill Deering, an owner of Certified Folder Display Service in the business park. Deering and other business owners complain that many trucks are left parked on the roads, making the streets narrow and difficult to maneuver around. This leaves the business park dangerous for customers coming to the area.

The real rallying cry for those in favor of prohibiting trucks from parking is a fatal crash that took the life of Televave Lealaimatafao on January 24, 2014. The 24-year-old Lealaimatafao slammed his 1997 Ford Escort into the back of a tractor-trailer parked on Park Center Drive. The car was wedged under the trailer.

What are your thoughts on the parking ban? Is it too severe? Do you think there are other ways to accomplish the safety the business owners are looking for?
