When Shadow Gartman from Grandbury, Texas, got news of stage four lung and brain cancer, he and his wife Amy had been working as a long-haul trucking team.
“Well, the doctor told me, he said, ‘Amy, it showed up that he does have a brain tumor and he has a very large tumor, 11.7 centimeters, tumor in his lung,” said Shadow’s wife, Amy.
Not sure of how much time he has left, the Gartman couple had to quit driving and deal with his illness. As they scrambled to pay the medical bills, a second wave of bad news came – the bank was foreclosing on their home.
If it wasn’t for a shed they purchased last summer, the couple and the pack of dogs they rescued, would be facing homelessness.
When neighbors Ed Churchman and Brad Smith heard about the Gartman’s situation on a Hood County buy, sell and trade site, they decided to lend a helping hand.
“Every company, every person that’s donated has something, that, in their life, they can relate to what’s going on for them,” said Smith. “And so we said, ‘You know what? Let’s do it.”
Now, other local vendors are contributing labor and materials to help transform the shed into their new. Construction is scheduled to begin later this month.
“My hope is to actually have a home for us and a comfortable place for my husband to pass away if that time should come and that he shouldn’t have to worry about us anymore,” said Amy.
