Family-Owned Trucking Company Goes Up In Flames

Published:

Fire departments from five communities were called to battle a huge fire that destroyed family-owned T.J. Lefter Trucking company in Indianapolis last night.

The fire was discovered when a sheriff’s deputy was driving by the location on U.S. 136 around 12:30 a.m. when he saw flames coming from the roof.

Crews from Brownsburg, Washington Township/Avon, Wayne Township, Pittsboro, Danville and Speedway were dispatched to fight the fire.

According to officials, fire fighters had to request Indianapolis Water to boost pressure because they needed more water to fight the flames that were quickly consuming the building.

The larger structure of the company contained smaller buildings inside, which made it harder to fight the fire from the outside, according to a Brownsburg Fire spokesperson. Crews tried to go inside but had to exit for safety, and continue fighting from the exterior.

T.J. Lefter Trucking had been at the location for 25 years. The owner reported no hazardous materials, and no one was inside the business at the time of the fire.

Traffic on U.S. 136/Crawfordsville Road was shut down from Raceway Road to Hendricks County 1000 East while crews were on the scene. Traffic reopened through the area around 5:30 a.m.
