Rodney Simpson, a Penske Logistics driver from Texas, was on his way home after his last run – when he noticed another motorist in trouble.
The vehicle in front of him was swerving, and suddenly tumbled down into a nearby embankment off of the I-30 loop (on 12-Walton Walker).
Simpson knew that there was water below and thought to himself, ‘please don’t go into the water…’ – (Rodney can’t swim).
The driver saw the vehicle crash into the water, and immediately took action, pulling over, and calling both 911 and the district police department.
He ran through the dark, and down the embankment to find the vehicle’s driver and passenger trapped upside down in the SUV.
First, Simpson ran to the passenger door. Unable to open it, he immediately broke open the window with his fist, freeing the passenger, and then made his way through the waist-deep water to the driver’s side.
This time, he was able to open the door and remove the injured driver.
After getting them both to safety, Simpson ran back up the embankment to flag down emergency responders.
The passengers of the vehicle made out alright, but Simpson had to have his hand stitched up after breaking the window of the SUV.
