Truck Driver Blames GPS for Ending Up On Pedestrian Bridge

Published:

A truck driver drove his truck down a pedestrian trail and ended up getting stuck on a pedestrian bridge in a Milwaukee park.

The driver told police he followed his GPS down the pedestrian path before getting stuck on the bridge.

In the process, the truck damaged several trees, concrete railings and two pedestrian bridges.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at Lake Park.

The 50-year-old driver has been charged with reckless driving and failure to obey road signs.

In March 2012, the FMCSA announced, they would “incorporate GPS training into new entry-level certification programs for commercial motor vehicle operators. This means that commercial drivers will be trained, and reminded, to only use GPS systems designed specifically for the industry. These specialized units take into account the specifics of the truck they’re in – including the height, weight and contents – and will then route the trucks onto appropriate roads. The consumer GPS units too often being used are frequently routing trucks onto inappropriate roads, causing them to crash into low overpasses and bridges.”
