Truck Driver Music: The Road Hammers

Published:

The new, full length album from The Road Hammers is finally here. Wheels, a sweet infusion of southern-rock and country, will have you tapping the steering wheel while you hammer through the miles.

If you like country music but haven’t heard of The Road Hammers, you should get to know them. They’re a one-of-a-kind band that makes music primarily for drivers.

Founded in 2004, the band started as a project by lead singer and guitarist Jason McCoy, a multiple Canadian Country Music vocalist of the year winner. He came up with the idea to make trucker music and gathered other musicians to hop on board.

The rest of the band is made up of: country-rocker Clayton Bellamy (whose father is a truck driver), and bassist, Chris Byrne – both of which are from Alberta, Canada.

The band’s first album, The Road Hammers, was released in 2005 and reissued in 2008 with a few new tracks such as “Blood, Sweat and Steel” for the U.S. market. Their new release, Wheels, is the first album release since the album Road Hammers II came out in 2009.

Wheels is just as much of a rock album as it is country music. Skipping over the fiddle and banjos found in traditional country, the group goes for big-production sound, mixing drums and electric guitars with traditional instruments like resonator guitars and harmonica. Their vocals and lyrics are strong too. Songs like “Wheels”, “Roll On Down The Highway”, “I’ve Been Everywhere” talk about the joys and hardships of life on the road – things most drivers can relate to.

A few slow songs on the album also make for good driving tunes such as “Annie” and “You Are My Highway.”

The Road Hammers will be playing shows across Canada the next few months.

You can check out the show listings on their Facebook page here or check out their website where you can listen to their music here.

The mighty “I’m A Road Hammer” is the first song on their new album Wheels: A track also from the new album: Sources The Road Hammers All Music Something Else Reviews Top Country
