Escaped Man Charged With Murder Steals 18 Wheeler And Drives To Texas

A man facing murder charges who escaped from an Oklahoma jail was arrested after stealing an 18 wheeler and driving it to Texas.

Escapee Wanted in Killing of Rancher

Paul Newberry was facing first-degree murder charges for the killing of well-known 88-year-old rancher Charley Kirk. Newberry and another inmate managed to escape from a third story window at the detention center where they were being held.

On Sunday night, Newberry and another inmate managed to escape from a third story window at the detention center where they were being held by breaking through the bulletproof glass and removing a metal bar. The other inmate suffered an ankle injury during the escape attempt and was soon recaptured.

Man Stole 18 Wheeler From Motel

After a two-day manhunt, police were unable to find Newberry. They got their break early this morning when a truck driver who was staying at a motel in Muskogee reported that his truck had been stolen. Authorities, aware that Newberry could drive a truck, contacted the driver’s company and used the GPS to track it to a location near Austin, Texas.

A police officer attempted to approach the truck, but federal authorities told him to back off so that U.S. Marshals showed up on the site. The Marshals intended to wait for SWAT, but Newberry started the truck so they were forced to arrest him so he didn’t drive off.
