Pennsylvania Senator Pushes For Tougher ‘Ice Missiles’ Law

Published:

According to a statement from Pennsylvania senator Lisa Boscolo, a bill has been submitted that would require drivers to remove ice and snow from trucks and trailers before hitting the road.

“Ice dislodged from rapidly moving trucks is very dangerous – and sometimes deadly,” Boscola said in Senate floor. “While public awareness outreach is the key to this process, we must underscore the seriousness of this issue with the force of law.”

Under her proposed bill, drivers would be required to “make ‘all reasonable efforts’ to remove accumulated snow or ice from their trucks before driving.”

There’s already a current Pennsylvania bill that fines drivers if ice flies off of their vehicles and causes bodily or personal property injury.  Boscolo’s new bill would take it one step further. ” She said her proposal would strengthen the existing law by deterring drivers from leaving ice on their trucks — preventing tragedies before they happen,” a statement from Boscolo’s office said.

The tougher bill was prompted by the death of a Pennsylvania woman who was killed when an 8-inch chuck of ice hit her car while while she was driving on Christmas Day in 2005.  The bill has been re-introduced each session, however, the Senator is optimistic the bill with pass with the current state governor and lawmakers.

“Too many truckers let highway winds do their snow removal for them,” Boscola said. “Snow can easily freeze, harden and turn into chunks of ice that can dislodge from a moving vehicle.”
