Iowa The Latest State To Change CDL Renewal Process

Published:

CDL holders in Iowa are now required to provide more documentation to receive renewals after a change in federal regulations — and many truck drivers are not happy.

Iowa informed CDL holders of the change to the process via a mass postcard mailing, but said that many drivers  were upset about the changes. The Osceola County Treasurer said, “They’re not real happy about it. They’re not aware of it I don’t think. So, they are kind of shocked when they come in and have to present that document. They’re wondering why.”

The state has done away with the 60-day grace period to renew a CDL, meaning that it must be renewed on or before a driver’s birthday

Additionally, drivers are now required to prove citizenship in order to renew their CDL.

Iowa drivers wishing to renew their CDL must present one of the following documents:

* U.S. Birth Certificate

* U.S. Passport

* Consular Report of Birth Abroad

* Certificate of Citizenship

* Permanent resident card

In addition, drivers need to provide documentation to prove their residency in Iowa. This can include your current CDL with an Iowa address, a piece of postmarked mail, or a document like a bill or pay stub.

Iowa is the latest state to make changes to the CDL renewal process. In Montana, New York, Maine, Illinois, North Dakota, Wisconsin are among the states that have already made similar changes to their renewal requirements.

Drivers in all states are encouraged to begin the renewal process as early as possible to avoid any problems with documentation.
