A new report from the Public Service Commission of West Virginia shows that commercial vehicle inspections have sharply increased this quarter.
Over 3,000 Truck Inspections Performed
According to the report, Transportation Enforcement Officers inspected 3,292 trucks on 10 highways designated as higher crash areas — a 58% increase over the same quarter last year.
212 trucks were taken out of service as a result of the inspection campaign. 502 drivers were issued citations for speeding, while 68 drivers received seatbelt violation citations. Officers performed 1,842 checks for drugs and alcohol. Drivers were also cited for faulty brakes, poorly secured loads, and improperly labeled hazardous materials.
Enforcement Blitz Funded By FMCSA Grant
The Transportation Enforcement Division considered the enforcement blitz to be a success, stating: “Having the ability to increase our presence in this way has made West Virginia’s roadways safer for the traveling public and has, no doubt, saved lives and property“.
The overtime required to perform the inspections was funded by a grant from the FMCSA.
