Caltrans To Regrind I-5 In Sacramento Following Series Of Big Rig Crashes

Published:

Following a series of big rig crashes on I-5 in Sacramento, concerned Caltrans officials have announced plans to regrind the pavement to give vehicle tires better traction.

The decision comes after recent crashes involving commercial vehicles. On December 10, a FedEx truck traveling north crashed through a concrete median and into the southbound lanes of I-5, hitting a pickup truck and killing the driver. And on December 21, two separate truck crashes occurred on I-5 during a rainy morning commute, causing huge traffic backups. Including these crashes, there have been 5 wrecks in the area since November.

Caltrans was so alarmed by the recent string of crashes that they shut down portions of I-5 yesterday for skid testing. The results led a Caltrans spokesperson to declare that the agency “needed to do something right away.”

Caltrans may start regrinding the pavement on I-5 as early as Sunday.
