CVSA Announces Results of Surprise Brake Check Day

Published:

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) yesterday announced the results of it’s annual, “unannounced” brake check day.

The surprise event was held on May 6, 2015 and is part of the CVSA’s Operation Airbrake program.

During the unannounced event, CVSA-certified inspectors in 32 U.S. states and Canadian provinces checked the brakes on 6,337 CMVs.

“Nine percent were placed out of service for excessive brake stroke violations (out of adjustment); last year, that percentage was 9.5 percent. This year, 7.7 percent were placed out of service for brake component violations (e.g., cracked or missing components, air leaks, damaged brake hose or tubing, drums, rotors, etc.) compared to 8.5 percent in 2014. This year, 14.2 percent overall were placed out of service for brake violations of any kind compared to 15.2 percent last year,” CVSA states.

The CVSA says that brake-related violations are responsible for the largest percentage of OOS violations– representing 46.2% of all OOS violations.

This week, the CVSA announced the dates of the agency’s annual Brake Safety Week which will be held September 6-12, 2015.
