Devastating Christmas Weekend Storms Kill At Least 43

Published:

At least 43 people lost their lives and dozens more were injured by deadly weather conditions across the U.S. during the Christmas holiday weekend.

Flash flooding killed at least 13 people in Missouri and Illinois, while tornados killed 11 in Dallas and 8 in Garland, Texas. One of the people killed in Missouri was 60 year old tow truck driver Edward Kammerer, who was killed as he tried to rescue another vehicle when a downed power line electrocuted him.

In New Mexico, over 16 inches of snow fell, leaving snow banks of up to 10 feet in some areas.

Authorities in New Mexico, Texas and Missouri declared a state of emergency while they worked to handle devastating storm damage.

Officials are still searching homes and vehicles affected by the storms. They fear the death toll could rise as they continue the process.

Weather conditions continued to cause problems into Monday. Mountain Grove, Missouri, residents were forced to evacuate after heavy rains caused a nearby dam to breach. A tornado was also spotted in Florida today, though no injuries have been reported.
