The EPA teamed up with CARB to fine Virginia based company $100,000 for operating 73 trucks in California without diesel particulate filters in its first ever federal enforcement action on Thursday.

Estes Express Lines will also be forced to spend nearly $300,000 on supporting environmental projects designed to clean the air.

The EPA says that they have been investigating out of state trucking companies that operate in California for over a year now.

EPA: More Fines to Come For Unfiltered Trucks

CARB enforcement division chief Todd Sax says this will be the first of many cases where they work with the EPA to target non-compliant trucking companies.

The Alliance for California Business has accused CARB of failing to investigate a series of truck fires that they say were caused by diesel particulate filters.

The EPA has stated that one unfiltered truck produces as much pollution as 100 cars, so they plan to crack down on as many trucking companies as possible.
