Illinois Road Closes For Four Months After Truckers Hit Low Bridge

Published:

A half-mile of Irving Park Road in Bensenville near O’Hare International Airport will close for the next four months because several truckers missed detour signs and rammed into a railroad overpass.

Low Bridge Causes Trouble for Truckers

The accidents happened the day after the overpass reopened.

The Illinois Department of Transportation blames the shutdown on truckers. They say that a “large number of truckers” failed to heed the sign warning about a low bridge and struck the overpass.

The stretch of Irving Park Road between York Road and South Access Road will be closed until a new railroad bridge is complete. The new bridge is expected to be completed approximately four months from now.

Irving Park Road Detours Announced

As a result of the Irving Park Road shut down, the following detours have been announced by IDOT:

  • Eastbound traffic along Irving Park will turn north on to York, then east on Touhy Avenue, east onto Higgins Road and then south on Mannheim Road.
  • Westbound traffic will turn north on Mannheim, then west on Higgins  and south on York.
