Man Who Stabbed Trucker On I-84 Pleads Insanity

Published:

The man who forced a trucker in eastern Oregon to the side of the road by ramming his diesel tanks and then stabbing the driver multiple times last year has pled not guilty by reason of insanity.

Attack on Truck Driver Was Unprovoked

Police say that the attack, which took place in August of 2014, was unprovoked. Dustin Leroy Rotter of  used a stolen Buick Lacrosse to ram the diesel tanks of a truck hauling two milk tanker trailers. When the driver, Charles Vanzante, pulled over, Rotter parked the car against the truck, then entered the cab and stabbed Vanzante several times. Rotter then briefly fled, but returned to the truck and again engaged in a struggle with Vanzante. He was taken into custody at gunpoint by Oregon State Troopers.

Vanzante survived the attack.

Guilty Except for Insanity Plea Entered

Rotter entered a plea of guilty except for insanity in the attempted murder. He was released from jail into the custody of the Oregon State Mental Hospital for the next 20 years.
