Oversized Load Shuts Down Alaskan Way Viaduct

Published:

A truck bearing an oversized load got stuck under an overpass, blocking traffic on Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct yesterday. Traffic was halted for around 2 hours.

The truck was carrying two large spools that weighed almost half a ton each. The spools struck the northbound overhead deck, wedging the truck underneath. No one was injured during the incident.

A front-end loader was brought in to reposition the spools. Bridge engineers were brought in to make sure that the bridge was safe before the bridge reopened.

The driver was issued a $480 ticket for failing to obtain an overheight permit and for hitting the overhead deck.

The accident comes only one month after a truck of overturned fish shut down traffic for over 9 hours, causing nightmarish gridlock. The massive traffic delay has been blamed on the Seattle Police Department, who were more interesting in protecting property. Seattle officials said that in the future, they would prioritize keeping traffic moving over property protection.
