Driving Through Michigan? Here’s What You Need To Know About Frost Laws

Published:

If you’re passing through Michigan, you should know that starting March 9, Frost Laws go into effect on many roads that are not designated as all-season routes. This means that weight restrictions are in place and you could face fines if you violate them.

What Are Frost Laws?

Frost Laws are Michigan’s attempt to protect their roads during the spring cycle of thawing and freezing. The stress of heavy loads on already compromised roads can cause stress fractures, buckling of roads, pot holes and serious damage to the base structures of the roads. To help alleviate some of the strain on the roads, officials can enforce restrictions that reduce the legal axle weight by 25% to 35%. Additionally, on some roads heavy vehicles cannot exceed 35 mph.

Violation of the Frost Laws can result in fines of hundreds of dollars. Michigan officials might also keep you from proceeding until you are compliant with the weight requirements.
