The Indiana Department of Transportation announced that they will use new technology to track overweight vehicles traveling on their roads without permits starting next year.
INDOT’s decision to try new ways to track overweight trucks comes after the southbound I-65 Wildcat Creek bridge was damaged by an overweight truck in June. Investigators believe that the truck weighed 58 tons with a single axle bearing about 72,000 pounds. Any load larger than 40 tons requires a permit.
The technology involves the use of asphalt embedded weight sensors that will detect an overweight truck and then send a signal to a camera, which will take a photo of the truck’s license plates.
Since this is a pilot program, INDOT will not issue citations. Instead, they will send an “awareness letter”, though they hope that in the future if the program is successful
