A bill that will prohibit trucks from traveling on Route 209, between Bushkill and Milford, in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is expected to be passed this week. Once passed, the bill is expected to immediately go into effect.
The ban does, however, have a few exceptions: trucks with fewer than 4 axels and trucks that are owned by local businesses will be allowed to continue to operate on the road.
Route 209 has long been a shortcut along the Delaware River for truckers.
Drivers who need to use the road will have to apply for a permit. The permit will likely cost up to $200.
Route 209 is operated by the National Park Service. In 1983, a bill was passed that allowed trucks to use the roadway. That bill expired on September 30.
