Too-Tall Load Causes Traffic Trouble In Texas

Published:

Texas Highway 6 was shut down for hours yesterday after a truck hit the William Joel Bryan Parkway overpass in Bryan, losing its load of two ten ton spools, crushing one car and forcing a minivan off the road.

According to police, the two wire spools were chained upright on the back of a flatbed truck. The spools hit the overpass, causing them to dislodge. Authorities cited the height of the overpass as 15 feet, 3 inches, though some images from the scene appear to show a sign that says 15 feet, 7 inches. One of the spools crushed the passenger side of an SUV. The SUV driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. A minivan was also forced off the road, suffering damage.

The driver, whose name and company have not been released, was cited for exceeding height requirements. The Department of Public Safety plans to investigate the truck driver.
