A staph infection nearly separated an Arkansas truck driver and his dog permanently, but the Kansas City community came together to help reunite them.
Driver Chris Price had been driving with his dog Coco in the passenger seat with him since the pup was 8 weeks old (Coco is now 7). On April 24, Price was feeling ill and collapsed at a truck stop in Kansas City. When the ambulance came to take Price to the hospital, he had no choice but to surrender Coco to animal control.
Coco wound up at KC Pet Project, a no-kill shelter. The problem? Price would need to be hospitalized for 3 weeks, but because of overcrowding, the limit on Coco’s stay at the shelter could only be 10 days. “Going to the pound 500 miles away from home, you just don’t know what’s going to happen,” Price said.
KC Pet Project staff members came to the rescue, negotiating a reduced boarding rate for Coco and collecting donations from staff members and volunteers to help cover her costs.
Coco and Price finally got to home together via ambulance on May 15.
