Crane Collapse Shuts Down Tappan Zee Bridge

Published:

A crane collapsed on the Tappan Zee Bridge today around noon, shutting down traffic in both directions indefinitely.

The collapse occurred near mile marker 15 on the Rockland County side.

Officials say that they are unsure why the crane collapsed. It was being used to build the new Tappan Zee Bridge scheduled to open in 2018.

At least two people were injured during the collapse.

Traffic authorities are warning drivers to avoid the area at all costs. South Nyack-Grand View police Chief Brent Newbury says that he expects a “traffic nightmare.”

In Rockland, officials are routing trucks off the Thruway at Exit 12.
