Meijer Agrees To Reimburse Trucker After Towing His Rig While He Shopped Inside

Published:

An Ohio Meijer has agreed to reimburse a trucker after they towed his rig from their Huber Heights store while he shopped inside — but the trucker says that it isn’t enough.

Meijer Tows Truck While Driver Shops Inside

Last week, California-based truck driver Daryl Winslow was dismayed to find that Meijer had towed his truck from their parking lot while he was shopping inside the store and having coffee. He admitted that there were signs forbidding unauthorized vehicles, but said that Meijer’s policy on truck parking was unclear. Winslow spent $381.75 on a cab ride and the tow bill.

Initial reports said that Winslow was in the store for about 90 minutes, but Meijer officials said that it was closer to four hours. “On average, it takes our customers 45 minutes to purchase 40 items in a Meijer store. Mr. Winslow spent nearly four hours in our store using the wi-fi connection in our Subway restaurant, before he purchased four items and left,” said a Meijer representative in a statement.

Store Agrees To Reimburse Trucker, But Will Not Tolerate Store Being Used As Truck Stop

Meijer has, however, offered to reimburse Winslow: “We have decided to reimburse him for the cost of the vehicle tow as a courtesy, but we hope this incident sends a very clear message that we will not tolerate our store being used as a truck stop, which creates an unsafe situation for our customers, disrupts our store deliveries and degrades the condition of our parking surface.

Winslow says that Meijer’s offer is not enough. He says that not only does he want to be reimbursed for the cost of the tow, but he wants the store to pay him $250 for the work he missed that day.

And he wants an apology: “I think they made a reasonable offer, but it would have been the right thing to do two days ago. I want to be made whole and apologized to. It’s as simple as that.”
