Michigan Police Say Careless Driving To Blame For I-94 Pileup

Published:

Michigan State Police say that they plan to cite drivers for the careless driving behaviors that led to the fatal I-94 pileup on January 17 near Hartford.

Over 60 Vehicles Involved In Chain Reaction Crashes

The pileup began around 2 p.m. on Sunday during winter weather conditions when a crash involving 8 passenger vehicles and 6 commercial vehicles in the eastbound lanes of I-94 was followed by a two semi truck collision a quarter of a mile down the road. 42 other vehicles became involved in the two truck crash. At about the same time, a 12 vehicle crash occurred in the westbound lanes.

One person was killed in the series of crashes. Three people were in critical condition and 15 others suffered minor to moderate injuries as a result of the crash.

Weather, Carelessness Both Factors In Pileup

Police say that while the weather was a contributing factor in the crashes, the undamaged vehicles near the crash scene are proof that it was possible to stop if drivers were traveling at speeds safe for conditions and paying attention to the road.

Michigan police are unsure exactly how many citations they will be issuing to drivers. The investigation into the crashes is ongoing.

Police have released a truck driver’s dash cam video of the crash, which you can view below. Please note that the time and date stamp is incorrect.
