A truck driver was killed in a crash that caused a dangerous toxic chemical spill near Cle Elum, Washington, this morning.
Crash Claims The Life Of Tanker Truck Driver
The crash happened in the westbound lanes of I-90 at mile marker 85.5 around 8:30 a.m. At this point in the investigation, police believe that the westbound tanker truck driver lost control and crashed into the median. A passenger vehicle was also involved in the crash.
During the crash, four anhydrous ammonia tanks fell off the truck and one of them began leaking ammonia into the air. That tank contained 1000 gallons of the chemical, according to reports.
A fire broke out, but crews have gotten it under control.
Ammonia Leak Forces Evacuation Of Homes And Rest Areas
Homes near the crash site and both the eastbound and westbound Indian John rest areas have been evacuated because of the ammonia leak. Authorities advise anyone in the area to turn off their air conditioning and close windows.
A 22 mile stretch of I-90 was shut down in both directions, causing heavy delays. WSDOT is reporting 2 hour delays on the detour routes of SR 10, SR 970 and US 97.
Transportation officials hope to have I-90 reopened by 5 p.m.
It is still unclear what caused the crash or whether any other injuries have occurred.
