Out Of Control Cattle Hauler Hits 23 Vehicles On I-17

Published:

Arizona police are trying to determine why a cattle hauler was unable to stop on I-17 yesterday, causing a 24 vehicle pile up that left four people seriously hurt.

The crash happened north of Black Canyon City near mile marker 246 around 1:30 p.m. yesterday. Troopers say that traffic had slowed for ADOT crews, who were removing signs to warn drivers about an earlier crash.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a cattle hauler was for some reason unable to stop for the slowed traffic, rear ending and sideswiping 23 other vehicles.

Said one witness to the crash, “We don’t know if he lost his brakes but a big rig was going way, way too fast, and he hit the first car over there.”

DPS is still working to determine why the truck didn’t stop.

Seventeen people were transported to the hospital. Four of those suffered serious injuries in the crash.

The truck was transporting 80 calves. None of the animals suffered significant injuries.

Transportation officials were able to reopen the interstate around 10 p.m.
