Rest Stop Stand Off With Armed Truck Driver Ends Peacefully

Published:

A truck driver has been arrested following a stand off at a rest stop off of I-29 north of Kansas City, Missouri.

The incident began when State Troopers received a report around 9:00 a.m. of a truck driver at the Old Pike Road rest stop in Dearborn waiving a rifle around and aiming it at drivers on the interstate. The truck driver was reportedly suicidal.

Troopers arrived on the scene, evacuated the rest stop, and shut down I-29 in both directions while the suspect remained inside of the truck with the gun.

For about three hours, the SWAT team attempted to make contact with the unresponsive driver but he refused to speak to them until negotiators used an undisclosed “final tactic”, after which the trucker surrendered peacefully.

No shots were fired during the incident. No injuries were reported.

The standoff caused miles long traffic backups, but both lanes of I-29 have since reopened.
