A Virginia trucker is facing charges after he drove several miles in the wrong direction without headlights before running into a Highway Patrol Cruiser on the Maine Turnpike last night.

State Police Pursue Wrong-Way Trucker

Maine State Police say that they started to receive calls about a tractor trailer driving north in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike around 9:30 p.m. Police believe that driver, 49-year-old Michael Crews, entered the Maine Turnpike in the wrong direction at the Kennebunk service plaza.

Semi Strikes Trooper’s Cruiser Before Stopping

Troopers were able to locate the truck in Saco and reported that they were forced to take evasive action to avoid a head on collision with the truck. It finally came to a stop after colliding with the rear end of a State Trooper’s cruiser.

The trooper was not hurt in the crash. Crews was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Crews is charged with driving to endanger.

The trailer of his truck was empty. It is registered to Blue Diamond Transportation.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
