Trucker Charged For Crashing Into Ohio State Trooper

Published:

A truck driver has been charged after crashing into a parked Ohio State Trooper yesterday.

Truck Hit Ohio State Trooper Stopped To Help Disabled Vehicle

The incident happened on I-70 east of Columbus around 9 a.m. when 45 year old Trooper Rodney Hart stopped to help 23 year old motorist Shanice Parker, whose vehicle was disabled in the right lane of the interstate. Hart and Parker were waiting in the trooper’s cruiser for a wrecker when a truck driven by 36 year old Eric Miller drove into the right lane, crossed through safety road flares, and crashed into the cruiser. The truck left the road, hit some trees, and jackknifed before coming to a stop.

Hart was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and later released. Parker was flown to a nearby hospital with more serious injuries. Miller also suffered minor injuries, but was treated by medics at the scene of the crash.

Ohio State Police say that the fact that Miller did not see the flares or the disabled vehicles on a clear day indicates that he was distracted by something.

Truck Driver Cited For Various Violations

Miller was charged with failure to maintain an assured clear distance ahead, failure to change lanes for a stationary public safety vehicle, and driving a commercial vehicle with impaired alertness.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol posted images of the mangled cruiser on Facebook, along with the message “If you’ve ever seen an emergency vehicle stopped on the side of a roadway and wondered whether you should move over a lane, look at these photos of a crash from just this morning.”

The crash remains under investigation.
