Published:

The man who allegedly shot and ran over a UPS truck driver in an Ithaca Walmart parking lot yesterday has confessed to police.

UPS Driver Dies After Parking Lot Attack

Shortly before 1 a.m. yesterday, 52 year old UPS tractor trailer driver William Schumacher was exiting a Walmart store when he was shot in the parking lot. The shooter then ran over Schumacher with a pickup truck. Schumacher died at the scene.

The alleged shooter, 38 year old Justin Barkley, fled the scene and fired at police who tried to pursue. After an hours-long standoff at Barkley’s home, he surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody.

He was charged with second degree murder.

Man Confesses To Intentionally Killing Driver, But Motive Is Still Unclear

According to police documents, Barkley confessed to the murder of Schumacher during a police interview.

From the Felony Complaint:

…the defendant stated that he had driven his vehicle to Walmart in the City of Ithaca, and shot a man in the chest with a .30-06 caliber rifle. Barkley also stated that he had intentionally driven over the body of the victim and spun his tires before subsequently being involved in a brief pursuit with police behind him. Barkley stated that he pulled his vehicle into the driveway of his residence, exited his vehicle, and fired a “sound shot” in an effort to prevent police officers from exiting their patrol vehicles.

Though Barkley has confessed to intentionally killing Schumacher, there is still no word on the motive for the crime.

Barkley is facing 25 years to life in prison on the murder charge.
