MassDOT Warns Drivers To Check For E-ZPass Overcharges

Published:

Following a flurry of customer complaints, MassDOT is warning drivers to check their E-ZPass statements for overcharges.

Drivers Report Overcharges For Months

The problem stemmed from an E-ZPass antenna malfunction at Exit 6 on the I-291 interchange in Chicopee. Many E-ZPass transponders were not being read, which led to some drivers being overcharged as if their trip had started in New York.

Though drivers have been complaining to MassDOT about this issue for months, officials have been slow to take action. MassDOT blames this on a breakdown in communication with a contractor.

One E-ZPass lane at Exit 6 was shut down for much of the day yesterday while workers made repairs to equipment.

MassDOT Recommends Checking E-ZPass Statements For Overcharges

When you check your E-ZPass statement, look for an entry listed as blank. This could mean that you have been overcharged.

If you believe that you have been overcharged, you can contact MassDOT directly at (877) 627-7745. Select option 3 to begin the reimbursement process. MassDOT warns that reimbursement could take some time.
