The hit and run driver who caused the death of a truck driver on I-10 near Slidell, Louisiana, last year was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday.
Pickup’s Reckless Driving Sends Trucker Into Pearl River
The crash happened on November 3, 2015 on westbound I-10 over the Middle Pearl River. During foggy conditions, 26 year old Daniel Coy attempted to pass an 18 wheeler on the shoulder, but ran out of room and hit a guardrail. He swerved back into the right lane, hitting the truck he was trying to pass, which then hit a semi in the left lane. The truck in the left lane, driven by 26 year old Steven Shawn Clark, plunged off the bridge and into the river below.
Clark died in the crash.
Coy fled the scene, but police were later able to locate and arrest him.
Judge Administers Maximum Sentence
Coy pled guilty to charges of negligent homicide, hit and run, and reckless driving. He was sentenced to five years for negligent homicide and ten years for the hit and run charge.
However, the judge suspended five years of the ten year sentence and will allow Coy to serve the sentences concurrently. The judge also gave Coy credit for time served on the reckless driving charge.
