No Fine For Bus Driver Stuck In Smuggler’s Notch

Published:

The driver of a bus that became stuck in Smuggler’s Notch in Cambridge, Vermont, over the weekend will not face any fines — in spite of the fact that semi truck drivers are now subject to thousands of dollars in fines if they become stuck in the same area.

The bus was carrying a junior hockey team from West Springfield, Massachusetts. The bus driver reportedly took a few wrong turns before getting stuck on Vermont Route 108 through Smuggler’s Notch on Sunday.

State Police and a tow truck were called in to assist the bus.

The bus was lodged in Smuggler’s Notch for over 2 hours.

Colonel Jake Elovirta with Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles says it isn’t recommended that RVs and motor coaches use Smuggler’s Notch, but that most pass through without any trouble.

No charges or fines were issued during the incident.

On July 1, Vermont lawmakers issued a ruling that allowed them to increase the fine for a truck stuck in the Notch from $162 to $2000. The last truck driver that was stuck in Smuggler’s Notch was issued a fine of $3,544. The ruling does not apply to buses.
