The FMCSA released a statement today that claims that commercial vehicle roadside inspections and traffic enforcement programs saved 472 lives in 2012 and over 7000 lives since 2001.
Roadside Inspections Also Prevented 9000 Injuries
The FMSCA used the most recent available data — that from 2012 — from the Roadside Intervention Effectiveness Model to determine that not only had inspections and enforcement programs saved hundreds of lives in that year, but they also prevented almost 9000 injuries. The RIEM is a tool specifically designed to measure how effective inspections and enforcement programs are at preventing crashes, deaths, and injuries.
Data Shows That Combined Efforts Of FMCSA And Trucking Industry Are Paying Off
According to the FMCSA’s Scott Darling, “Our analysis demonstrates that inspectors at roadside and state troopers conducting traffic enforcement are making a vital difference to prevent crashes. In addition, the truck and bus industries are working every day to comply with federal safety regulations designed to make sure that everyone reaches their destination safe and sound.”
Around 3.5 million commercial vehicle inspections take place in the U.S. every year.
