Published:

Police in Maryland used dump trucks to spot texting drivers during a distracted driving enforcement operation on I-95 yesterday.

Operation Trojan Horse Uses Dump Trucks To Disguise Police Effort

The distracted driving campaign, called “Operation Trojan Horse”, took place from Baltimore City to the Delaware line. Police in marked and unmarked vehicles took part in the collaborative effort to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.

The “Trojan Horses” were MDTA dump trucks, which gave officers a higher vantage point and a way to disguise themselves from motorists. When an officer spotted a motorist using a handheld device, he would signal to a support unit to pull the vehicle over.

172 Drivers Pulled Over In 7 Hours

Police pulled over 172 drivers and issued 113 citations and 111 warnings during the seven hour campaign.

Though the campaign focused on motorists, police did perform four commercial vehicle inspections. One truck and one truck driver were placed out of service.
